La roue de fortune

Fortune tarot Isabelle Cardinal La roue de fortune I just love Tarot cards… somehow the fortune telling imagery seems to be link to my style of illustration. There is something magical and mysterious about it all. So I decided to participate in a challenge from a Blog called Collage Obsession Challenge. The theme is about Fate, Fortune, luck: the Fortune Wheel card of the Tarot.

Fortune is a mystery… we all want it, but we are often unsure how to get there. Is this pure luck? Faith? Is this our own will? What is turning that wheel? Strangely the theme for IF this week is Surrender… I think there is a link there. Maybe if we surrender, fortune will come our way.

    This is wonderful.

Great imagery. I love that with just a simple counter-clockwise turn of the crank-shaft, the monkey can make the royal griffin fall from its perch and bring the now struggling hanger-on to the top.

What a beautiful metaphor. Really nice work.

Sorry, I guess it is more of a sphinx. Forgive my lack of exactness in categorizing beasts of antiquity! :)

yes , a sphinx with her beautiful face sitting quietly on the top of the Fortune Wheel…. will she be rewarded?
    Nice illustration.

Excellent illustration of the Fortune Wheel. I’d like to see the other cards now!

I don’t trust “fortune’s wheel”–because it IS a wheel, and it does turn. I find this illustration disturbing, but that’s no doubt a good thing. The beings are frightening, not what we see everyday, and the whole thing is lush with color. Beautiful!

    Love it!
Is the monkey turning the wheel part of the “standard” iconography?

  13. Posted February 2, 2011 at 9:45 am | Permalink

Paolo, the monkey was part of the original iconography, but was on the wheel (often on the left, going down), on another tarot deck, there was a woman blindfolded (Justice?) turning the wheel. I found it amusing to have the monkey turning that wheel. The bat is never on that card, but in Chinese folklore bats are a symbol of good fortune and luck. The animals on that card are always dressed as human, so that was fun!! :–)
