When I was a kid, I had this music box with a ballerina that danced to the “Love story” song (you can hear it here) The ballerina got lost at one point but I kept my music box, with all the precious treasures in it… it’s actually the one in this illustration, except the mirror was a triangle, and I decided it would be really nice to replace it with an heart.
I am such a nostalgic, would you believe it still has all the things from my childhood in it: 3 old coins, an old stamp from France, a small pen, 2 very small rings, a tooth (!), a gold bracelet and numerous small charms. Ho and a ring made of a golden cigar paper (my favorite). I keep thinking how easy a child can be mesmerize by small treasures…. and ballerina’s … and music boxes. So this is my small animated illustration entry for this week’s theme for IF: mesmerizing. Hope you like it !

Par ou commencer? Qu’est ce qui est envoûtant? (C’est le thème d’Illustration Friday ). J’ai toujours été fascinée par ma toute première (et seule) boîte à musique. C’est celle qui est dans mon illustration, à la différence que j’ai changé le miroir pour un coeur. Et si vous voulez entendre la musique, c’est par ici! Avec les années, la ballerine s’est perdue… (elle s’est peut-être poussée avec un soldat, qui sait?) mais j’ai conservé tous mes petits trésors: 3 vieux sous, un vieux timbre de la France, un petit crayon, deux très petites bagues, une dent (!), un petit bracelet et de nombreuses breloques miniatures. Ho mais aussi une bague en “or” fait d’un bout de papier à cigar métallique! … bref, rien de plus envoûtant pour un enfant (ou un adulte nostalgique, comme moi) qu’une boîte à musique, une ballerine, de la musique et quelques trésors.

Boundaries… we all have them. When to cross the line, when to obey? Good question. Dogs are so good at respecting the limits (usually, anyway). I find it quite funny when I compare their behavior with cats who seems to be totally unaware of boundaries. So this is just a small illo to illustrate this week topic’s.

Les limites… nous en avons tous. Quand dépassé la ligne, quand obéir? Bonne question. Les chiens sont vraiment bons pour respecter les règles (en général). Et je trouve ca assez drôle de comparer ceux-ci aux chats, qui ont une toute autre vision des limites… (lire zéro). Voici donc une petite illustration sur le sujet de cette semaine sur IF.

Here is another one for the Seven Deadly Sins - Sloth ! Strangely it also works pretty well with the Illustration Friday theme: Mysterious. I am trying to stick to a carnival feel for this deadly sins illustrations, so it’s a triple challenge for me. I figured… what could represent sloth more then a clown falling asleep while the show is going on.
Then came the idea of collaging his friend on the background, mad at him for being such a sloth. Of course the water bucket is a must whenever clowns are involve, right? So the mystery is probably… will he trow it?

Voici une autre illustration pour les septs péchés capitaux: La paresse. Merci à Rick de Collage obsession Challenge pour ce quatrième “péché”! J’aime beaucoup illustrer cette série, c’est tout un challenge car je fais mon (gros) possible pour faire du même coup le thème d’Illustration Friday, qui est mysterious / “mistère” cette semaine.
J’ai pensé qu’il serait rigolo d’illustrer ce péché par un clown trop paresseux qui s’est endormi juste avant le spectacle. Puis j’ai pensé faire son acolyte, un peu découragé, histoire de mettre un peu d’action. La question étant… est-ce qu’il va lui envoyer son seau d’eau à la figure? À suivre j’imagine … et de là arrive le mystère.

Trying to hit two trees with one stone here… did this for IF and for Collage Obsession challenge! Nice theme. This week while shopping for some shoes for my boy, we met a buffalo man. For sure he was in disguise (cause he looked like a man). He was so angry, it was impossible not to hear him yell at his kid, even when he was on the other aisle. I always feel strange and nervous when I am in the same room as someone with that much rage inside. Bad energy circling around is never fun to experience. And since they were also shopping for shoes, they were tough to avoid. What puzzled me was that his kid was actually behaving quite well, trying some shoes on (but not fast enough for his father). So the buffalo man kept yelling.
So much rage… I had problems focusing on what we were there for… finding shoes. Maybe he was lacking sleep or maybe it’s just his normal way of being. So here is the Buffalo man, without his disguise. He is holding an armadillo. I wanted to represent the child as a different creature, a colorful one, but also wanted him to have a good shell for protection. The colors I choosed are actually meant to be 2:1 for blue and orange, that was a combination offered on the Collage Obsession website. Not sure I have the exact proportions but I did try. Take care, of yourself and of all your armadillo’s!

Le theme de cette semaine sur If est “Déguisement”, j’ai voulu faire une pierre deux coups en combinant aussi le challenge du Collage Osession Challenge, qui proposait les couleurs complémentaires en proportions intéressantes. L’idée de l’homme-bison m’a été offert par… lui-même. En magazinant les souliers de mon garcon, un bison (déguisé en homme) criait très fort après son enfant. Si fort qu’on ne pouvait éviter d’entendre. Le pire dans tout ca c’est que l’enfant semblait très bien se comporter… mais il n’était juste pas “assez rapide” à essayer ses souliers, selon le père. Oufff… difficile à vivre. Bon, peut-être que le bison n’avait pas eu une bonne nuit de sommeil la veille… mais quand même. J’ai toujours beaucoup de misère à voir (et entendre) quelqu’un crier et perdre les pédales, surtout sur le dos d’un enfant. Bref je me devait d’illustrer l’homme-bison. Sans son déguisement. Il tient dans ses mains un “tatou“. Ma facon de donner une armure, une méga protection à l’enfant. Bonne journée et prenez bien soins de vos petits “tatous”!

The nice part about that new IF topic: influence, is that it translate the same in French. Seriously, the first idea I had was actually a political illustration… I wanted to illustrate about the growing influence of the Tea Party in the US political sphere… my idea was all ready to go, sketched and all. And then I changed my mind (happens a lot when I wear both hats: art director & illustrator… Oh well) anyway, I decided to go with a totally different approach, as you can see below.

La partie vraiment chouette du sujet de Illustration Friday de cette semaine (Influence) c’est que j’ai pas besoin de traduire le mot hihi. Sans blague… ma première idée était très axé sur le politique Américaine, soit l’influence du “Tea party” aux Etats-Unis… mon idée était toute prète, esquisse et tout. Et puis j’ai changé d’idée, comme ça m’arrive souvent hihi… j’ai décidé d’y aller avec une toute autre aproche. La voici!

I love this week theme on IF. I have found that it is often the imperfections in an artwork (and also in people) that makes them interesting. In a way, imperfect is perfect. This week was a busy one… and so I was wondering how and when I would find time to do an illustration for this lovely word. Yesterday I stumped upon an amazing site while on Google+ (you can add me if you are already there, cool stuff happening there). The App is call “Scribbler” and it actually transforms any drawing you would do by adding random lines and such…
…there is colors lines that can be added too but I went with black, I liked the web effect. Anyway they have this version directly on the web site to try it out. Had sooo much fun doing it, and while this drawing started out as a very defined idea (in my head), it became something completely different. Imperfect, for sure, but so interesting. Just like life, love, art.

J’adore le thème de cette semaine sur IF. Je trouve que ce sont ces imperfections qui rendent les oeuvres (et les humains) intéressants. Dans un sens, l’imperfection c’est la perfection. Cette semaine j’ai été super busy, alors je n’étais pas certaine de pouvoir participer au challenge de la semaine sur IF. Mais par chance, en navigant sur Google+ (si vous y êtes, voici ou me trouver, en passant!) j’y ai vu un lien très intéressant sur un App pour le Ipad (qu’on peut essayer sur le site) qui se nomme Scribbler. On dessine ce que l’on veut, et après ca génère une tonnes de petites lignes et ca transforme le tout en quelque chose d’assez beau et surprenant. Imparfait, oui, mais si intéressant. Comme la vie, l’amour et l’art.

I am trying to do both subject this week… Gluttony (Second of the 7 deadly sins illustration, after “Lust”) from Obsession Collage collective, and the IF theme this week is: Obsession. So all I had in mind was the rage about hot-dog contests. I remembered seeing some of these contest on TV… I did not know how many they could eat, so I searched on Wiki. So… (rolling drum)… 69 hot-dogs (in 10 minutes). I know, scary… Ok it’s a contest and all, but still. To me it really represent gluttony. I also would like to keep that same carnival-esque feeling for all 7 deadly sins.

Je tente de faire un deux pour un cette semaine, en illustrant la gourmandise (un des 7 péchés capitaux, je suis maintenant à 2 avec la “Luxure”), une idée de Obsession Collage Collective. Ainsi que (justement) le thème de cette semaine sur Illustration Friday: Obsession. C’est moi ou il se passe de quoi avec ces fameux concours de hot-dogs? Hallucinant de penser que quelqu’un puisse avaler 69 hot-dogs (j’ai vu sur Wiki!) en 10 minutes. Bref c’est plus que de la gourmandise, j’irais plus avec l’appellation “gloutonnerie”. J’ai aussi pensé garder le petit côté “carnavalesque” pour chacun des 7 péchés capitaux… j’ai hâte au prochain péché!! hihihi

So this is a great theme. Perennial. Plants and flowers, of course… and perennials are my favorites, to be honest. I planted lot’s of them all around our house. But the theme also made me think of growing… up. Of children, how fast they grow, what they need. The “recipe” for both is… quite similar: seeds (of love), lots of care, and time..
The more time, the better. They grow up so fast. This is also a tribute to my parents, the greatest time-love-care givers I know…. for me and my sister, growing up… and now for both our kids. I guess good parents makes good grand-parents. Thanks for your love, care… and time you spend with our boys. They will cherish it all their life, ans so will we. Love you.

Voici un thème que j’aime beaucoup. Vivace. Ca fait penser aux plantes et aux fleurs, bien sur… et ce sont celles que je préfèrent, honnêtement. J’en ai planté plusieurs autour de la maison et année après années c’est vraiment beau de les voir grandir. Ca m’a donc aussi fait penser aux enfants. Ils grandissent tellement vite! J’y ai vu un lien. Ca ne prend pas grand chose pour une plante (ou un enfant) pour qu’il grandisse bien… de l’amour, bien sur, mais aussi beaucoup de soins et surtout… du temps. J’en profite justement pour remercier mes parents, qui sont les maîtres incontestés du savoir “donner”. De l’amour, des soins et surtout, de leur temps. Merci, pour le temps que vous nous avez donnés… et pour le temps que vous donnez à nos garcons. Ils s’en souviendrons toute leurs vies. Et nous aussi. Je vous aimes… GROS.

I really liked doing that last quick animation last month (Asleep) so I decided to add a small animated feature to this one too. This illustration was done for yet another challenge call Collage Obsession, and this week theme is Vampire related. Really what I wanted to do was just make a lady vampire, place her in a very “portrait” like manner, and add elements that would generate a story by itself.
Something happened. She looks kind of mad, or sad. Maybe she is holding the skeleton head of her great love. Vampires too, dies, eventually. And the crow, maybe he is just her friend, maybe he is the one that brought the bad news. Maybe she is the one who commited the crime. Vampires are so unpredictable.
One way or the other, I would love to have your own story about this…so will wait for your comments!! Oh … just checked on the IF site… think I will submit it, since the theme for the week is “gesture”. Strangely it also fit the image… in my view anyway.

J’ai vraiment aimé animer une de mes illustrations le mois dernier (Asleep)… donc je récidive ce mois-ci avec ce collage digital. J’ai puisé l’idée de vampire par ce site que j’aime bien: Collage Obsession. C’étais le thème de la semaine et ca va chercher mon (petit) côté sombre. En partant je voulais simplement faire un genre de “portrait” d’une dame vampire. Et puis je me suis dit pourquoi pas ajouter des éléments pour qu’on sente bien qu’il s’est passé quelque chose. Quoi? Là est la question. Elle semble triste… ou un peu en colère, non? Est-ce la tête de son amoureux, sur ses genoux? Est-ce que le corbeau est un ami? Ou est-il simplement le messager de cette triste nouvelle? Votre interprétation est la bienvenue! Au fait, étrangement le thème de cette semaine sur IF est “gesture”, traduction: “faire un geste”. Ici le geste a été posé… on ne sait pas qui l’a fait, peut-être elle… les vampires sont si imprévisibles!

A long time ago, I did the illustration for ICI magazine, it was 8 small illustrations on different type of people, and one of these type was hypochondriacs, as Wiki put it so well: it “…refers to excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness”. I do not know if there is a remedy for this condition… but I do know that most of us have some kind of fears, and I guess it’s all a matter of what we do with it. There is a quote I really like about this…
Courage is not the lack of fear but the ability to face it.”
When I saw that this week Illustration Friday was “Remedy”, it’s the illustration that came to my mind. But when I opened it, I was like “Humm… well.. maybe I can re-work it a bit”. So I did, and I am posting the old one (black and white) and the new version (a bit more colors and some adjustment with the light, textures and details).
Voilà un petit bout de temps déjà, j’ai fait 8 illustrations pour le (feu) magazine ICI, le but était d’illustrer 8 type de personnalités, dont l’une était le type hypocondriaque. Donc quand j’ai vu le sujet de la semaine sur IF (remède), j’ai tout de suite pensé à cette illustration. Je l’ai re-travaillé un peu (couleur, lumière, textures) mais c’est resté assez près de l’original. Nous avons tous nos peurs, grandes et petites… mais je crois que le meilleur des remèdes est de… leurs faire face. Une citation que j’aime bien:
Le courage n’est pas l’absence de peur, mais plutot la capacité d’y faire face.
