I have no idea why this illustration came to my mind when I saw the theme for this week subject on IF: Prepare. I did this illustration (actually is a revised version of it) originally for the Chicago Tribune, a couple of years ago. I re-did it (changed a few things) … but the main subject (the Swiss army knife guy) is pretty close to the first illustration I did… years ago.
Funny thing, I still feel it apply on today’s time… workers often have to be quite flexible and ready to learn some new “tricks” to keep up with all the technology and social media. It’s a jungle out there.. well I guess that’s why we all need to be prepared. hehehe.

Je ne sais trop pourquoi mais c’est l’image qui m’a semblé la plus appropriée pour le thème de IF cette semaine: Prepare. J’ai fait cette illustration (en fait c’est une version ammiliorée hehe) à l’origine pour le Chicago Tribune.
Bref, c’elle-ci n’est pas bien loin de l’original, l’idée est la même, le petit monsieur en couteau Suisse, l’employé flexible. C’est uelque chose d’assez important, surtout aujourd’hui… avec les nouvelles technologies et les nombreux média sociaux. J’imagine que c’est ca le lien entre cette image et le thème… difficile de faire autrement, il faut être “préparé’ pour sauter dans l’arène!

Holidays are getting closer… and it’s now a tradition, each year we do this great promo with my agent, Anna Goodson (AGM), the coasters!! We send those to all our clients; Art directors of magazines, news-papers an advertising agencies, all over the world. They just arrived and sorry if I am a bit biased but they all look AMAZING!!
This year theme is “The Circus”…was so fun to think of an idea for this theme!! So here is mine… hope you like it!

Another busy week… but who am I to complain? … This week’s theme on IF is: Fuel. Soooo busy, I have to dig in my illustration vault, again… but this was an easy find. I remembered this job very well. This one was done for the Chicago Tribune. I will post the sketch and the page layout below. I remember I was very happy with the way the art director designed that page. Funny, this was done years ago, but somehow we still have the same issues… fuel prices are so high, it’s strangling us. Specially true for people with huge SUV. I guess some things don’t change. Editorial works are great, I always love a good challenge… I guess it’s my fuel.

J’ai donc cherché pour une illustration éditoriale déjà fait sur le sujet… et je me souvenais de celle-ci, fait pour le Chicago Tribune voilà de cela quelques années. C’est étrange… le temps passe mais les problèmes restent les mêmes!! … le prix de l’essence est à un niveau record… c’est pas facile pour le portefeuille. Encore pire pour ceux avec une camionnette. Mais bref… j’ai aimé faire cette illustration, et j’ai aussi aimé ce que le directeur artistique a fait comme mise-en-page. J’aime beaucoup faire de l’editoriale… il faut trouver des idées rapidement, c’est mon carburant à moi, j’imagine. Je retourne travailler sur… autre chose hihihi.

Excuse me but I really had to do a double read on the theme of IF for this week. Contraption… because I had never heard of this word. Maybe (probably) because my first language is French… I had to look it up online. Thank you Google. And since it is nearly impossible (for me anyway) to do an illustration in 15 minutes – always amazed when I see people post illustration on the site in the minute that the subject is up… how do they do it? Probably are some kind of magician or mind-reader’s-Or they, has me, worked for years as an editorial illustrators and have a mega-vault of published illustrations on numerous subjects. So here is my entry. Sorry it’s a re-heat… I always love to cook original images for IF… but some week are busier then others. This illo was originally done for Computer World magazine, with a very interesting story from Gary H. Anthes alongside: “Roll your Own”. On how (and mostly why) some company’s decide to build their own software instead of using off-the-shelf ones.

Un machin, un truc… voilà le thème d’IF pour cette semaine. En cherchant sur Google j’ai trouvé une définition un peu plus précise`un gadget électronique”. Impossible pour moi de faire une illustration en 15 minutes. Esquisse? Oui… mais illustration, en photo-montage? No way. Je me demande en fait souvent comment les illustrateurs sur le site peuvent pondre une image aussi rapidement… le sujet vient juste d’apparaitre et hop… voila! Mais peut-être sont-ils comme moi… des illustrateurs qui ont travaillés longtemps en éditorial et ils ont plusieurs images dans leur “coffre”… bref en voici une qui a été fait pour le Computer World magazine, voilà quelques temps déjà, mais que j’ai bien aimé faire. Pour un article sympa écrit par Gary H. Anthes et ayant pour titre “Roll your own”. Le sujet: les entreprises qui décident de fabriquer eux-mêmes les logiciels qu’ils utilisent au lieu d’acheter ce qui est disponible sur le marché. Pourquoi cette illo? Je trouve qu’elle vieillit bien… et j’aime la répétition des robots/logiciels…. je veus dire des “machins”, des “trucs”. hehehe.

First day of school… I think it’s as tough for the child as it is for mom… and dad too. I did this illustration a couple of years ago for Today’s Parent Magazine. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the subject of this week for illustration Friday: Stay.

Première journée d’école, les papillons dans l’estomac… je pense que c’est aussi difficile à vivre pour l’enfant que pour la mère (et le père… j’imagine). J’ai fait cette illustration voilà quelques années déjà, pour le magazine Todays Parent. Le sujet de cette semaine étant “stay” (reste), sur Illustration Friday, j’ai tout de suite pensé à cette illustration.

Posting here a published illustration (did this one for PC Magazine in 2006). The title of the story I had to illustrate was “A Dozen Ways to boost your business” So the story talked about these 12 technologies that can “rocket” your small biz ahead of competition. I like to illustrate for tech magazine, I always learn new stuff.
+Additional note; Here are the 3 sketches I submitted to client before doing the final.. I always advise the client that my sketches are a million miles away from final… cause they are! But I think it’s important to sketch a lot before doing a final illustration, even if it’s digital collage… a lot more creativity goes into it this way (for me anyway).

Une illustration déjà publiée (pour le PC Magazine en 2006). Le titre était ”A Dozen Ways to boost your business”, … 12 technologies qui peuvent propulser une petite entreprise au devant de la compétition. J’aime illustrer pour les magazines techno, j’apprends toujours plein de trucs.
+Note additionnelle: J’ai ajouté les 3 esquisses envoyées au client.. je mentionne toujours à celui-ci que mes esquisses sont très très loin du final, car elles le sont. Mais je trouve important de faire plusieurs esquisses, souvent je crois que c’est ce qui fait la différence au final.

Crazy week (is it me or do I repeat myself over and over again? hehe) anyway since this week topic on IF is bottled, I had to post this illustration I did for an editorial for the Indianapolis Monthly. Title was “Death of the Party” and the Subtitle was: “Getting between an addict ans his addiction can turn a best friend into the enemy.” Very interesting job to do, since it was a very personal and emotional story (written by Mike Knight). I think the feeling of it all was in sinc with the mood of the story and I was quite pleased with the result (a rare thing, I am tough with myself). It can be quite difficult to help someone who is “bottled up” in his own world, even harder to do so when we see that they are heading for the bottom. Hope you like this one… now going back to work on some new jobs that just got in! :) Have a great week!!

Cette semaine est complètement folle. Bon je semble toujours et encore me répéter depuis quelques temps mais c’est vraiment le cas. Pour le IF de cette semaine, le thème est “bottled” et j’ai tout de suite pensé à cette illustration fait voilà un petit bout de temps pour le magazine Indianapolis Monthly. Une histoire très touchante de deux amis qui tentait d’aider leur ami à vaincre son problème d’alcool, en lui écrivant une lettre. Très émouvant comme histoire donc, et j’ai tenté de “rendre” ce sentiment d’impuissance… suis assez fière de moi (ce qui est rare!). Alors voilà… je retourne travailler car j’ai des nouvelles jobs pour les prochaines semaines!

The subject for this week’s Illustration Friday is Layer. It’s an easy one for me as all my digital collages are done in layers! But I think there is much more in that word then just the usual photoshop layers. People are complex… so many layers to one person, it is quite amazing. So while juggling with that idea, I remembered I had done this illustration, a couple of years ago (2005 if my notes are correct) on a very interesting story in a magazine (for The Magazine Group) on child with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or AD/HD or ADD). The story was of a couple who had a child that was “different”, but they could not figure out what it was until they heard about ADHD. So after piles and piles of documents and meeting specialists, they finally could find some answers to their questions. Recently I have been watching the very good TV series Parenthood, and one story line that I find particularly touching is this couple who have a child (Max) with Asperger syndrome, a form of autism. I can only imagine what it must be like, for parents and families, to go trough this. It’s a good thing that magazines and TV shows are now talking more and more about these issues. We have so many layers… some are well hidden, some just show up without even asking. It’s difficult to understand the numerous layers that compose a human. But maybe trying to understand… is actually what makes us human.

Le sujet pour Illustration Friday de cette semaine est: Layer, ce qui pourrait se traduire en “couche”, dans le sens d’empiler les couches. Bref, c’est une chose que j’utilise beaucoup dans mon travail, car Photoshop m’aide souvent à construire des illustrations, en utilisant ses “layers”/calques. Mais en y réfléchissant, j’ai eu cette pensée pour une illustration qui date un peu (2005) pour un magazine du “Magazine Group”, portant sur les enfants ayant le trouble du déficit de l’attention (TDA) / hyperactivité). Cette histoire m’avait beaucoup touché, le couple ayant consulté énormément avant d’obtenir réponses à leurs nombreuses questions sur leur enfant. Ils savaient qu’il était différent, mais sans savoir de quoi il était question. Je regarde depuis peu (disponible sur City TV!) la très bonne émission “Parenthood” qui traite d’un sujet très près de celui-ci: le syndrome d’Asperger, qui est une forme de l’Autisme. C’est très touchant et troublant de s’imaginer tout ce que ces familles vivent. C’est bien qu’il y ait de plus en plus d’articles de magazines et de séries télé sur ces sujets. Ça nous apprend que l’humain est composé de plusieurs couches/”layers”. J’imagine que le fait de tenter de comprendre ce que les autres peuvent vivre et ressentir, c’est ce qui nous rend humain, après tout.

This week’s theme for illustration Friday is: prehistoric. All I could think of is how fast the technology is going. It was not so long ago… we had to wait for our dial up modem to connect to the internet -we use to call it the World Wide Web, remember? How corny is that in 2010? Anyway… for a lot of you, these were prehistoric time. And for me too, at times.
I have found that illo I did in 2002 for the Reader’s Digest, and it felt so appropriate. I bet a lot of you have no idea what an old modem (trying to connect) sounds like, but to me it sounds like “old times”. But technology wise, 1996 is prehistoric. Use to talk to people on IRC (still exist?) or directly by Telnet.
Fun time it was. It felt like we were discovering a new way to make connection, to meet people from all over the world. Exactly what we do now with blogs. Back then I felt like I was the only illustrator out there, or it seemed. I could only “talk” to programmers!! Now we are trillions of people, and it is so much easier for illustrators to show their artwork via the web in their own website. Ok so I am nostalgic of the sound of the old modem, but not of the time it took to actually load ANY website … or file. I remember once it took me 3 hours to send a final illustration to a client. Now the same file takes less then a minute.
I can only imagine how technology will advance and change in the next 15 years. Maybe we will feel nostalgic about the good old “Twitter” and oh… remember the RSS Feeds?? Enjoy the moment. We are already into prehistoric time. :–)

Le thème de cette semaine pour Illustration Friday est: préhistorique. Étrangement, ça m’a fait penser à toute cette technologie… combien ça va vite, et combien elle devient quasi-préhistorique si rapidement. Il faut dire que ça devenait très très laborieux de se construire un site web avec portfolio en 1996!
Enfin bref, c’étais voilà de celà pas si longtemps…qui sait si dans 10 ou 15 ans, on ne rigolera pas en pensant à ce “bon vieux Twitter”!! Et vous vous souvenez des RSS feeds? Nous vivons sûrement déjà à une époque qu’on nommera dans 15 ans de… préhistorique!

This year we are going back in time, yep, it ‘s the -ho so great TV series- Mad men and the 1950′s and 1960′s. Watch out Don Draper!!
