Urban – urbain

So… I know it’s been a while since I posted here… been extremely busy with 3 things: life, jobs & etc (etc being all the rest!!) But here I am, with this week’s theme on Illustration Friday : urban. Fun theme, isn’t it? I love the city… it seems people always look “foxy”, specially in N.Y.  I took the background picture in New York a few years back. Check out his bag… hehehe of course Mr. Fox went shopping!!

Alors, voilà… je sais que ça fait un bout mon dernier “post” (mea culpa)… j’étais vraiment très occupée avec trois choses: la vie, les jobs et etc.. (oui, etcetera est tout le reste!)  Mais j’aime le thème de cette semaine sur Illustration Friday : urbain. J’aime la ville… les gens y sont tellement… “foxy”, surtout à N.Y. La photo en background a été prise là-bas par moi voilà de ça quelques années. Mr. Fox qui fait du shopping, c’est classique.

Fuel – Carburant

Another busy week… but who am I to complain? … This week’s theme on IF is: Fuel. Soooo busy, I have to dig in my illustration vault, again… but this was an easy find. I remembered this job very well. This one was done for the Chicago Tribune. I will post the sketch and the page layout below.  I remember I was very happy with the way the art director designed that page. Funny, this was done years ago, but somehow we still have the same issues… fuel prices are so high, it’s strangling us. Specially true for people with huge SUV. I guess some things don’t change. Editorial works are great, I always love a good challenge… I guess it’s my fuel.

J’ai donc cherché pour une illustration éditoriale déjà fait sur le sujet… et je me souvenais de celle-ci, fait pour le Chicago Tribune voilà de cela quelques années. C’est étrange… le temps passe mais les problèmes restent les mêmes!! … le prix de l’essence est à un niveau record… c’est pas facile pour le portefeuille. Encore pire pour ceux avec une camionnette. Mais bref… j’ai aimé faire cette illustration, et j’ai aussi aimé ce que le directeur artistique a fait comme mise-en-page. J’aime beaucoup faire de l’editoriale… il faut trouver des idées rapidement, c’est mon carburant à moi, j’imagine. Je retourne travailler sur… autre chose hihihi.

Contraption – machin

computerworld rollyourown contraption Contraption machinExcuse me but I really had to do a double read on the theme of IF for this week. Contraption… because I had never heard of this word. Maybe (probably) because my first language is French… I had to look it up online. Thank you Google. And since it is nearly impossible (for me anyway) to do an illustration in 15 minutes – always amazed when I see people post illustration on the site in the minute that the subject is up… how do they do it? Probably are some kind of magician or mind-reader’s-Or they, has me, worked for years as an editorial illustrators and have a mega-vault of published illustrations on numerous subjects. So here is my entry. Sorry it’s a re-heat… I always love to cook original images for IF… but some week are busier then others. This illo was originally done for Computer World magazine, with a very interesting story from Gary H. Anthes alongside: “Roll your Own”. On how (and mostly why) some company’s decide to build their own software instead of using off-the-shelf ones.

Un machin, un truc… voilà le thème d’IF pour cette semaine. En cherchant sur Google j’ai trouvé une définition un peu plus précise`un gadget électronique”. Impossible pour moi de faire une illustration en 15 minutes. Esquisse? Oui… mais illustration, en photo-montage? No way. Je me demande en fait souvent comment les illustrateurs sur le site peuvent pondre une image aussi rapidement… le sujet vient juste d’apparaitre et hop… voila! Mais peut-être sont-ils comme moi… des illustrateurs qui ont travaillés longtemps en éditorial et ils ont plusieurs images dans leur “coffre”… bref  en voici une qui a été fait pour le Computer World magazine, voilà quelques temps déjà, mais que j’ai bien aimé faire. Pour un article sympa écrit par Gary H. Anthes et ayant pour titre “Roll your own”. Le sujet: les entreprises qui décident de fabriquer eux-mêmes les logiciels qu’ils utilisent au lieu d’acheter ce qui est disponible sur le marché. Pourquoi cette illo? Je trouve qu’elle vieillit bien… et j’aime la répétition des robots/logiciels…. je veus dire des “machins”, des “trucs”. hehehe.

Stay

First day of school… I think it’s as tough for the child as it is for mom… and dad too. I did this illustration a couple of years ago for Today’s Parent Magazine. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the subject of this week for illustration Friday: Stay.

Première journée d’école, les papillons dans l’estomac… je pense que c’est aussi difficile à vivre pour l’enfant que pour la mère (et le père… j’imagine). J’ai fait cette illustration voilà quelques années déjà, pour le magazine Todays Parent. Le sujet de cette semaine étant “stay” (reste), sur Illustration Friday, j’ai tout de suite pensé à cette illustration.

Launch

Posting here a published illustration (did this one for PC Magazine in 2006). The title of the story I had to illustrate was “A Dozen Ways to boost your business” So the story talked about these 12 technologies that can “rocket” your small biz ahead of competition.  I like to illustrate for tech magazine, I always learn new stuff.

+Additional note;  Here are the 3 sketches I submitted to client before doing the final.. I always advise the client that my sketches are a million miles away from final… cause they are! But I think it’s important to sketch a lot before doing a final illustration, even if it’s digital collage… a lot more creativity goes into it this way (for me anyway).

Une illustration déjà publiée (pour le PC Magazine en 2006). Le titre était ”A Dozen Ways to boost your business”, … 12 technologies qui peuvent propulser une petite entreprise au devant de la compétition. J’aime illustrer pour les magazines techno, j’apprends toujours plein de trucs.

+Note additionnelle:  J’ai ajouté les 3 esquisses envoyées au client.. je mentionne toujours à celui-ci que mes esquisses sont très très loin du final, car elles le sont. Mais je trouve important de faire plusieurs esquisses, souvent je crois que c’est ce qui fait la différence au final.

Soaked

soaked Isabelle Cardinal1 SoakedWhen you are a parent, one of the toughest thing (for me anyway) is to see my kid cry. It seems they cry a river. I realized that words often don’t change a thing, or so it seems. Sadness happens, and we as parent often wish it would just go away… fast. But it is something we have no control over, really. Soaked in their sadness. They eventually stop crying… when there is no more tears to fall.

Une des choses vraiment difficile, comme parent, c’est de voir notre enfant pleurer. On a beau tenter de les consoler par les mots… on dirait que rien ne fonctionne. Toujours difficile de les voir pleurer, si ils ont mal (à l’âme ou au corps) on a mal nous aussi. Et quand il ne reste plus de larmes, la tristesse s’en va… enfin.

Lesson

lesson illustration LessonOk let’s talk homework and lesson, (since lesson is the subject of this week IF). First of, I did not like school. I was not particularly good in school, except in my art class (surprise surprise). The thing is, I always taught that I did not like school because I felt it was so difficult (math!!) and my long term memory was… well… non-existent I guess.

And so when my boy turned out to be my exact opposite: math-savy with a super memory the size of  earth (not exagerating) and had… zero interest in art… I figured: “Great, he will love school!!”. But nope. Does not work that way.  He think school is boring -of course when you always finish first, it can be a long day in school-.

So I guess “not liking school”, and lessons, and homeworks… must be a universal thing for kids. And since I ended up doing my BA in Graphic Design (and my boy is telling me he wants to go to University too), my guess is that once you start studying something you actually love, the stairs magically disappear. Just got to get trough that tough part. :–)

Cette semaine le thème d’Illustration Friday est “Lesson” (en Français la leçon)… ça m’a fait penser à mes années d’école (primaire)… ouf… pas facile!! J’adorais les arts mais il fallait oublier les math, car la mémoire à long terme était… heu… non-existante?… enfin presque. Et j’y ai vu là… LA raison pour laquelle je n’aimais pas l’école. Bref quand j’ai vu que notre beau garçon était tout mon contraire: très bon en math, super mémoire et … n’aime pas trop les cours d’arts plastiques… j’ai pensé: Il va adorer l’école! Hé non… c’est que, c’est bien long, quand on a terminé, que d’attendre… et d’attendre encore.

Mais bon, en ce qui me concerne, ça ne m’a pas empêché de faire mon Bacc en Design graphique… et notre garçon a bien hâte à l’Université. Comme quoi si on trouve une matière à étudier qu’on aime, tout est possible. Il faut juste patienter… le temps qu’il faut.

PS – Les marches éternelles sont les “Panrose stairs” soit des escaliers qui ne finissent jamais… très bien illustrées par M. C. Escher.

Bottled

bottled BottledCrazy week (is it me or do I repeat myself over and over again? hehe) anyway since this week topic on IF is bottled, I had to post this illustration I did for an editorial for the Indianapolis Monthly.  Title was “Death of the Party” and the Subtitle was: “Getting between an addict ans his addiction can turn a best friend into the enemy.” Very interesting job to do, since it was a very personal and emotional story (written by Mike Knight).  I think the feeling of it all was in sinc with the mood of the story and I was quite pleased with the result (a rare thing, I am tough with myself). It can be quite difficult to help someone who is “bottled up” in his own world, even harder to do so when we see that they are heading for the bottom.  Hope you like this one…  now going back to work on some new jobs that just got in!  :) Have a great week!!

Cette semaine est complètement folle. Bon je semble toujours et encore me répéter depuis quelques temps mais c’est vraiment le cas. Pour le IF de cette semaine, le thème est “bottled” et j’ai tout de suite pensé à cette illustration fait voilà un petit bout de temps pour le magazine Indianapolis Monthly. Une histoire très touchante de deux amis qui tentait d’aider leur ami à vaincre son problème d’alcool, en lui écrivant une lettre. Très émouvant comme histoire donc, et j’ai tenté de “rendre” ce sentiment d’impuissance… suis assez fière de moi (ce qui est rare!). Alors voilà… je retourne travailler car j’ai des nouvelles jobs pour les prochaines semaines!

Here is my take on this week subject for IF … and I also wanted to share with you two other ideas I had in mind, and my sketch for the final I did. I am browsing a lot of great web site these days and I realized I really enjoy seeing the “process” behind the final illustration. So here are 2 other ideas and the one sketch (yep, no 3) that I liked the most. It’s a pretty interesting subject, because so many things can be seen as “immovable”. Time, space, elephants, huge rocks, slunk, porcupine…. or just a teen boy playing on his ipod touch for hours… and hours…. and…

Cette semaine le thème de IF est: immovable. Ce qui pourrait se traduire ainsi: Impossible à bouger. Et après plusieurs visites sur des sites d’illustrateurs qui exposait leurs esquisses… je me décide et je poste ici quelques idées. J’ai pensé à une tonne de trucs pour le sujet de cette semaine: le temps, l’espace, un éléphant, une méga gros rocher, une moufette, un porc-épic et finallement, pourquoi pas un ado assis sur son sofa avec son Ipod… il me semble que c’est difficile de trouver plus immobile … hehehe. Sketches 1-2-3 :

Ripple

Last week’s illustration theme for IF (yeah I am late, it is Friday already!) was Ripple. It has a special meaning because all the illustrations that were made for this week’s topic are about the oil spill in the gulf. ripple lowres1 RippleSo all the illustrations had to be 2.5 x 3.5  and are for sell… all profits (yes ALL) will be donated for two great causes (at 10.00$ each signed on the back)  The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies or The International Bird Rescue Research Center . My idea behind the two illo’s: I feel really sad to see all these birds dying because of the oil spill… so I imagined a guy refusing to see the obvious (yeah, corporate kind) and the bird, well the bird  doesn’t have a voice to cry and ask for help. They die in silence. So on the second illo I gave the bird a voice. I hope you will donate for this cause. Can be time, can be an artwork, can be money. Anything will help them.ripple2 lowres Ripple

En Français maintenant! Le sujet d’Illustration Friday de la semaine dernière… (ben oui je suis en retard…mais c’est pour une bonne cause) : “Ripple” : vous savez ces petits ronds qui apparaissent dans l’eau quand on lance une roche? Bon ben c’est ca le sujet. Si quelqu’un quelque part connait un mot en  français qui peut remplacer cette longue phrase interminable, je vais le prendre.  Bref… le sujet est en fait le désastre écologique qui perdure dans le golf du Mexique. Ainsi, chaque illustration sera vendue (10$ chaque) sur le site  ripplesketches Ce sont de petites illustrations de 2.5″  x  3.5″ et les dons (chaque sous) seront remis a deux organismes :  The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies or The International Bird Rescue Research Center .

Pour ce qui est des deux illustrations en question… l’idée était de donner une voix à ces oiseaux qui n’en ont pas. Svp donnez pour la cause, que ce soit en temps, en argent ou en illustrant. Les 2 illustrations suivantes seront imprimées sur un papier de bonne qualité, signées à l’endos et envoyées directement par moi.
