So this is a great theme. Perennial. Plants and flowers, of course… and perennials are my favorites, to be honest. I planted lot’s of them all around our house. But the theme also made me think of growing… up. Of children, how fast they grow, what they need. The “recipe” for both is… quite similar: seeds (of love), lots of care, and time..

The more time, the better. They grow up so fast. This is also a tribute to my parents, the greatest time-love-care givers I know…. for me and my sister, growing up… and now for both our kids. I guess good parents makes good grand-parents. Thanks for your love, care… and time you spend with our boys. They will cherish it all their life, ans so will we. Love you.

Voici un thème que j’aime beaucoup. Vivace. GROS.

No illustration today, just a photo I have on my wall. I have a couple of photographs there, drawings also, and vintage postcards too. But I have pinned there mostly stuff that makes me smile, or just makes me feel good. Lots of old circus posters (I find them just beautiful, with all the “old” colors and different acrobats) and some old photos I picked… some I have bought in huge batch, some, like this one, who I bought individually. This one, when I saw it on Ebay (not to name it), I smiled. And old photos rarely makes me smile.
I think it’s just the simplicity of it. I have seen a lot of old pictures, often it’s the usual “portrait” of people (but that’s usually what we do, now days too, right? We want to “capture” that person, at that moment in time) But this one… was different. The subject, laughing on the background, looked naturally happy. Nobody told her to smile, she was just in the moment, watching the cat with the two small kitties drink the milk in the bowl. read more »

This week’s theme for illustration Friday is: prehistoric. All I could think of is how fast the technology is going. It was not so long ago… we had to wait for our dial up modem to connect to the internet -we use to call it the World Wide Web, remember? How corny is that in 2010? Anyway… for a lot of you, these were prehistoric time. And for me too, at times.
I have found that illo I did in 2002 for the Reader’s Digest, and it felt so appropriate. I bet a lot of you have no idea what an old modem (trying to connect) sounds like, but to me it sounds like “old times”. But technology wise, 1996 is prehistoric. Use to talk to people on IRC (still exist?) or directly by Telnet.
Fun time it was. It felt like we were discovering a new way to make connection, to meet people from all over the world. Exactly what we do now with blogs. Back then I felt like I was the only illustrator out there, or it seemed. I could only “talk” to programmers!! Now we are trillions of people, and it is so much easier for illustrators to show their artwork via the web in their own website. Ok so I am nostalgic of the sound of the old modem, but not of the time it took to actually load ANY website … or file. I remember once it took me 3 hours to send a final illustration to a client. Now the same file takes less then a minute.
I can only imagine how technology will advance and change in the next 15 years. Maybe we will feel nostalgic about the good old “Twitter” and oh… remember the RSS Feeds?? Enjoy the moment. We are already into prehistoric time. :–)

At times some teens can look quite immovable
Here is my take on this week subject for IF … and I also wanted to share with you two other ideas I had in mind, and my sketch for the final I did. I am browsing a lot of great web site these days and I realized I really enjoy seeing the “process” behind the final illustration. So here are 2 other ideas and the one sketch (yep, no 3) that I liked the most. It’s a pretty interesting subject, because so many things can be seen as “immovable”. Time, space, elephants, huge rocks, slunk, porcupine…. or just a teen boy playing on his ipod touch for hours… and hours…. and…

Sketches 1-2-3 :
